On our excoursion to the National Park Hohe Tauern in Osttirol we participated in a tour with 2 rangers to see wild animals. There were 5 animals we were looking out for:

  • Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra): which is an antilope goat which does not really live in herds but they keep to themselves other than the mother with her own young.
  • Ibex (Capra ibex): Another antilope goat but they live ins stronger social groups
  • Golden Eagle (Gypaetus barbatus)
  • Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus)
  • Marmot (Marmota marmota)

with the exception of the Bearded Vulture we got to see all of them, although the Eagle was very dificult to make out.

Of course we were also surounded by a vast diversity of plants, and one of our two rangers took the time to point out some to us. At first he pointed out the most poisonous plant of the area, and also of Europe: Aconitum Tauricum. (Poisonous Flowers).
But he was not the only one drawing our attention:

  • bearded bellflowers
  • forgetmenot
  • Leontondon helveticus
  • Gentiana lutea got a lot of attention, but I did not get to see the blooming one. They are rare to be found in bloom, because they are often collected before for the use of making Schaps
  • rampion
  • Anthyllis
